For centuries ghosts have haunted
Charleston, South Carolina, from pirates to
spirits beyond imagination. Hail Lady
Heather, a modern phenomenon from this
region steeped in folklore. She enchants us
with her work and envelops us with her
persona, mythical goth.
When we see any one of her pieces we can
imagine her engaging with the spirit of her
mother, her two chinchillas lying next to
her desk, an old wooden coffin with a skull
atop. She paces the room slowly as she
answers her mother’s questions about her
most recent series, The Masquerade of Thy
Night, then stops to pet her vulture.
Suddenly she whirls around, walking
quickly away from her pet, then turns the
sound down on her television.
We now recognize THE SHINING playing in the background. She listens
carefully and hears the leaves rustling, fairies have come to visit, a respite
before moving on to the next plane. “A rustle in the wind reminds us a fairy
is near” – unknown. Part of her mantra. She rearranges the dark purple
drapes, pulling them open, exposing the night and the fairies. A
thunderstorm is coming, always inspiration. She can now converse with the
fairies before the storm…then get back to work.
She greets a fairy, the fairies’ leader. The fairy flaps her wings in response to
Lady Heather then acknowledges Lady Heather’s mother’s spirit as well.
“The Masquerade of Thy Night?” the fairy asks. “Go beyond their eyes,
walk amongst their broken souls, surrender to their twisted minds, and that
is where you will discover a piece of yourself,” answers Lady Heather. The
fairy nods, satisfied.
The fairy asks Lady Heather about a gothie, one of her creations. “Gothies
are tiny mischievous fantasy inspired creatures that come in all different
forms. They are new to the darkness, hidden in the shadow. When you
hear a bump in the night, it’s not your imagination, it might just be the
Gothies.” The fairy smiles…
“The fairy godmother has requested a list of exhibitions and paintings from
Lady Heather’s gallery,” the fairy says.
“Very good,” responds Lady Heather. “I shall recite them to you.”

“The fairy godmother doesn’t communicate via email,” giggles the fairy.
“Well, you never know,” Lady Heather responds, smiling. She watches as
the fairies wave goodbye. She looks out at the thunderstorm, closes her
drapes, then goes back to work.
